I accidentally sold his Wolf Armor, and then later I parted ways with him. When I got to Breezehome, I entered to see Vilkas wearing nothing but boots and gauntlets, and he is permanently like that when he isn't following me. Good thing or a bad thing, I dunno :D

Actually it’s not even a glitch :) The wolf armor respawns in his pocket if you sell all the items, but as long as he has something of the set, like gloves or boots, it doesn’t reappear. When followers don’t follow you, they put on their apparel. And if they have only gloves and boots, that’s all they can put on :)
Vilkas Age Chart
I wanted to practice drawing people at different ages and since I have a mountain of headcanon for him, I figured Vilkas was a good choice. This includes a number of armors that I created for him or changed from in game ones. I may or may not get to Farkas depending on if I’m lazy/get distracted.
